Water - Rare Through Lack of Rain

When I was a child, we took it for granted that some days would be sunny, some rainy - whatever came along was accepted.

Later, although rain was always accepted as a necessary evil, it certainly wasn't welcome, because there was always washing to get dry, things to do outside, and places to go.

Now of course, rain is seen for what it really is - a blessing, which we need, and which we now get all to infrequently, at least here in Melbourne, Australia.

The northern parts, of course, are now getting the monsoons, and plenty of heavy rain, leading to floods. We down here in the south are severely envious, as we see our food growing areas drying up, and our farmers becoming discouraged and leaving the land their families have owned for generations.

The soil is turning to dust and is blowing away with the north wind. Too much water has been extracted from bores in some areas, and salinity is becoming a problem. Plants and animals are suffering, and permanent water is no longer permanent. Unbelievably, there are still those who don't believe in climate change.

What can we do? Use as little gas, electricity, water, as possible. Recycle what you can. If you can't use something, consider giving it to someone who can. If we all did a little, then I believe we can make a difference.

When it rains, collect what you can in rainwater tanks, buckets, ponds, whatever you can. Use your greywater for the toilet - keep the clean water for drinking and bathing. Plant your garden with drought resistant plants. Trees and shrubs will shade your house and keep it cooler in summer, so you'll need less airconditioning. Use insulation in your roof space, to keep the heat in during winter, and out during the hot season.

Where I live, we get a bit excited when it rains now, and tend to dash to the windor or door to watch it! Who would have believed that could ever happen a few years ago? Water is becoming scarce, and I'm enjoying it while we still can.
