Sleep Is Sometimes Very Elusive!
By Jean Dandrea
Sleep - something we all need, but don't always get enough of! For many of us, there are always those nights where we lie in bed, tired, sleepy eyed, but unable to turn off our minds and relax enough to sleep. A friend always turns on the TV and swears it puts him to sleep. Personally, I can't stand noise when I'm trying to rest so that one wouldn't work for me. What causes these sleepless nights? There are many and varied causes, including too much caffeine, medications, stress, pain, noise, temperature extremes, hormonal changes; the list goes on. For those nearing 60, there is an added cause. The body produces less and less melatonin, the hormone that helps control sleep. Over 60, there is very little of this hormone produced at all. This is why older people seem to need less sleep. What can you do about sleepless nights? If it's a temporary condition, such as that caused by a virus like flu, just wait it out. Colds and flu don't last forever, although it can sometimes seem like it! If you find your room is too light, perhaps a sleeping mask may be just the thing. If your condition is chronic, it may be time to see your doctor, and get some help. No-one wants to have sleepless nights, and no matter what the cause is, something can be done.
As a retired office administrator, I have plenty of time to spend on my hobbies, gardening, computing, sewing, reading, and my pets.

Yep, Them hormones have a lot to answer for!
One of the joys of life is to sleep when tired and wake when no longer tired. It's a sad fact that bed time seldom fits in with when you are tired - indeed, for many people, bed time is a habit. If you can't sleep, do something else. Go for a walk or try to wake up a dog or a snake (the dog will love you for it - not sure about the snake) and play with them. I suppose I am past the age of being concerned about hormones but I have never been that bothered about sleeping at any time. I also suppose, like many things that aren't working, the more you try to sleep. the less likely you are to succeed.

Hi Arthur, Well, since my snakes are nocturnal by nature, I guess they wouldn't mind being played with at night. Cheers Jean
