If You Meet A Snake.........
If you happen to meet a snake, either walking in the bush, a park, or even in your own home or garden, don't panic! Snakes are usually timid and shy creatures, and will try to get away from you as fast as they can. If you are walking through the countryside, try to make some noise, because it will give snakes and other creatures a warning that you are there, and they will have time to get out of the way. If you see a snake, or other reptile, please don't try to kill it, or catch it - most bites are received this way. Leave the animal alone, as it has a right to life too. In Victoria, Australia, where I live, all snakes are protected species, although most are venomous. We have some of the most venomous snakes in the world, but there are very few deaths from snakebite. Sometimes a snake will be stepped on by accident, and of course, like anyone or anything else, they'll react in self-defence. Unfortunately, this often means a bite. First aid for snakebite : Put a pressure bandage on the wound, and seek medical help as soon as possible. Don't get into a panic, as you'll have some time before the venom takes effect in most cases. DO NOT WASH THE WOUND ! This is because if you are unable to identify the snake, it can often be done by a sample of the venom from the bite, and this will aid in your treatment. Enjoy the bush or the countryside on your next visit, and let the wildlife enjoy it in their way also. Reptiles are beautiful creatures, and are an essential part of ecology. Take a little care where you step, and you should have no problems.

Contributor's Note
Snakes are one of my favourite animals, and I hate to see them treated as badly as they often are.
