Heart Attack

Heart Attack ! Are You At Risk ?

Most of us don't think about the possibility of having a heart attack, do we? I know I didn't, until a couple of weeks ago.

My partner's 32 year old son had a heart attack. He's young, pretty fit, and not one you'd think was a candidate for it, so it was a big surprise to him, and everyone else.

A heart attack is an injury to the heart muscle caused by a loss of blood supply. It usually occurs when a blood clot blocks the flow of blood through a coronary artery — a blood vessel that feeds blood to a part of the heart muscle. Interrupted blood flow to your heart can damage or destroy a part of the heart muscle.
(This paragraph is from http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/heart-attack/DS00094)

Symptoms of heart attacks (Myocardial Infarction)

Pain, squeezing/crushing feeling in the chest
Pain in the jaw, toothache, headache
Shortness of breath
Nausea or vomiting, or upper abdomen discomfort
Sweating
Heartburn or indigestion
Pain in the left arm (Occasionally the right arm is involved)
Pain in the upper back
Feeling generally weak or vaguely ill

You may experience no symptoms at all - about 25% of heart attacks are without pain or symptoms, especially for people with certain types of diabetes.

Women are more likely than men to have pain or symptoms unrelated to the chest area, such as sweating, nausea, etc.
They can also get pains in the area above the navel.

If you have any of these symptoms, it is important to get medical assistance straightaway. The longer you delay, the worse the damage to your heart muscles will be.

Of course, these symptoms may be something else entirely, which is why it is important to seek medical help.

Many people have warnings for some time, even weeks, before a heart attack strikes. These warnings often take the form of chest pain (angina), particularly or during, excercise.

Prevention of heart attacks:

Eat a healthy diet, which is low in cholesterol.
Have your cholesterol checked.
Excercise regularly - brisk walks are recommended.
If you're deskbound, get up often, move around as much as possible.
Don't smoke.
Don't drink - a drink a day is fine.
Keep your weight down.
Reduce stress.
Keep your blood pressure down.

I know many of us don't really like to consider these things, but as I said at the beginning of this article, they can surprise you. If you think you're at risk, then seek medical advice as soon as possible. Who knows, it could save your life!
