Getting My First Pet Snake
Since I was a small child, I've been fascinated by snakes and lizards, and used to sit in the garden for hours watching out for them. Mostly I saw lizards, as there are not too many snakes in England. As a teenager, I asked for a pet snake, much to the horror of my mother. Needless to say, I didn't get one. Years later, after a divorce, and now living in Australia, I finally got my own home, with no-one to answer to, but I'd forgotten about the snakes. Then a friend mentioned that he'd acquired a small black and yellow carpet python. That was it! Shops that sold reptiles were investigated, and a wildlife licence was applied for. Couldn't wait for it to arrive. Of course, lots of research was undertaken, so that I could provide the snake with a habitat suitable for it, to keep it happy. The cage was set up and waiting before the licence arrived, complete with water, substrata, thermostat, hide box and a log to climb on. The big day came, and off I went to the nearest reptile shop. Shortly thereafter, my new pet, Snappy, an eight month old Stimson's python, was introduced to his new home. He immediately hid, and didn't come out for a couple of days. I left him alone to get used to his cage, and when he decided to come out, handled him for short periods each day. He's a happy little snake, and is now approximately one metre long and now eight years old. Hard to believe I've had him that length of time. These days, I have two female stimsoni for him to play with, and an eight foot long Centralian python; my gentle giant. If you're considering getting a pet reptile, be warned, it can become addictive! |
