Danger From The Sun
Have you ever suffered from sunburn, after overdoing your time in the sun? If the answer is yes, you could be risking much more than a few hours or days of soreness - you could be risking your life! Many people are still unaware of the dangers of overexposing their skin, damaging it, and possibly laying the foundation for skin cancer later in life. There are three types of skin carcinoma. 1. Basal Cell Carcinoma This type is often easily detected and has an excellent record for successful treatment. It can be frozen with liquid hydrogen in your doctor's surgery. Having basal cell carcinoma, however, can mean you are more prone to other more serious types of skin cancer. 2. Squamous Cell Carcinoma This form of skin cancer is typically found on the ears, face, lips and mouth. It can also spread to other parts of the body. It is highly treatable, although it can be far more agressive than basal cell carcinoma. 3. Malignant Melanoma This is the most serious type of cancer, and is far more dangerous than the more common basal cell cancer, or squamous cell cancer. It does not occur so often, but has a much higher death rate. If you have any changes in warts, or moles, particularly bleeding, or some scaly red patches on your skin, please see your doctor - it could be nothing, but it might also be the beginnings of skin cancer. Here are some basic precautions you can take against developing these problems:- 1 Cover up whenever you can when outside 2. Wear at least factor 15 UV Block; higher is better 3. Wear a broad brimmed hat; heads burn through your hair If you have children, ensure that they too are protected from the sun - babies in particular have very sensitive skin. Try to use a waterproof UV block, especially if on the beach, or at the swimming pool. Note : Before you cover yourself or your child with any sun protection cream, it's a good idea to test it twentyfour hours before you need it, on a small patch of skin. Inside your forearm is a good place. For further information, check with your Doctor, or Health Department, or do an online search. |
