Climate Change
A few days ago, I read a comment somewhere, stating that there was no such thing as climate change. I didn't make a note of where I saw it, but I've been thinking about it since reading it. Do you believe in climate change? I certainly do. The evidence is clear, and can be scientifically proven - just do a search in your favourite engine, and see what you come up with. Our weather here in Victoria, South Eastern Australia, has certainly become much drier in the past twenty years, and hotter. We are in drought at present, and so far, it's lasted for about ten years. Our water catchments are at their lowest point ever, and we have been on water restrictions for several years now. I believe they should have been declared much earlier than they were. You'd be forgiven for believing that there was no water shortage in Australia, watching the news recently. We've got floods from the monsoon season, and tropical cyclones, in the North of the country, with lives lost, and evacuations, not to mention the damage bill. Here in Victoria, and also in South Australia and Tasmania, we are at the end of summer. So far we've been lucky, with no really catastrophic bushfires. There is no reason for complacency, however, as the next couple of months, as we move towards the cooler weather, could be extremely hot and windy. This week marked the 25th anniversary of Ash Wednesday, one of the worst fires the south of Australia has ever had. Whole towns were destroyed, and lives, some of firefighters, were lost. The Fire Authorities are saying it is not a matter of if it will happen again, but when. These extremes of weather certainly didn't happen, when I first came to Australia many years ago. It's certainly much hotter in summer, and winters don't seem to be so cold. It certainly doesn't rain as much as it used to. So yes, I believe in climate change. The governments of the world must do more, before it's too late. If we all play our part, no matter how small it is. we CAN make a difference.
