A Teacher
By Jean Dandrea
When I saw the topic Qassia was highlighting for this week, I just couldn't resist writing about a teacher I had at Grammar School in England, years ago. She taught French to the junior school, and although I tried hard, and was pretty good at French, she appeared to dislike me intensely. On one occasion, I actually won a contest in the class for making the most French words out of another word, and was supposed to be given a prize. Of course, she promised to bring it the next day, but when I asked for it, she said she'd forgotten it, and would bring it the next day. I said she wouldn't remember it, and I could tell from the look on her face that she had no intention of me getting that prize. Why do teachers assume that young people can't see through them when they lie? She really wanted her favourite pupil, a boy who came second, to have the prize. On another occasion, she struck me across the face for getting up to go to the toilet at a break, without asking her permission. The class was over anyway, and what good teacher would deny a child the right to go to the toilet? She made me ask for permission, and then took delight in refusing to let me go. That was unforgivable. Anyway, writing it out may finally get rid of the bad memories, but I still dislike French, and the French to this day!
